SV027 – Arch Origin – Value Shift EP [OUT NOW!]

Our first release of 2017 sees the welcome return of Soulvent faithful and long time friend, Daniel Van Mourik – better known as Arch Origin. Dan caught our attention over the past few years with tracks like City By Night and Mesmerize, and it’s clear to see the producers’ progression; as he landed his first release on the legendary d&b imprint Hospital Records last year. His Value Shift EP is a 6-track journey through his ever-emerging sound, as well as encapsulating some important social observations for the millennial generation. This varied offering should surely satiate any budding drum and bass fan, who’s been waiting for an Arch Origin release!

First up, ‘Dusty’ opens with a smooth, sultry half time drum groove. Warm subtle chords and swells are paired with a classic-sounding MC over the top. Wasting no time, it drops straight into rumbling sub bass and a solid drum break, with various counterpoint synth lines draping the track. Overall, there is something truly nostalgic to this track – despite all being freshly combined elements. ‘Escapism ft. Anna-Eva’ saw it’s first release on last years Soul Sessions Vol. 2, however Anna-Eva’s vocals breathe fresh life into this crisp liquid roller. Her longing, soulful phrases couple effortlessly with the warm synth and strings. Meanwhile ‘Urban Periphery’ opens with sparse, clicking percussion, and an ethereal vocal sample – with a drum fill giving way to this deep, techy roller. At the half-way mark ‘Recluse ft. Mr. Porter’ kicks off with melancholic, airy tones – perfectly matched by Mr. Porter’s wistful, hauntingly processed vocals. Varied percussion…‘Empyrean’ serves as a soothing interlude between tracks, with its bubbling synths, and gritty half-tempo edge – as well as a welcome aural change in the EP format of the genre. Title track ’Value Shift’ sees a dreamy pad open to driving percussion, whilst a sampled speech talks to us about values, an interesting theme in this day and age!

Having played our stage at the first ever Hospitality In The Park festival last year, as well as closing off 2016 with a set at the Liquicity Winterfestival – 2017 sure looks to be a promising year for the young Dutch talent. Daniel’s production is often laden with nostalgia, wether intentional or not, it seems to always leave you with the feeling that you’ve heard it somewhere before. With that said, we’re sure the EP will resonate in the hearts and clubs of the scene for months to come.

SV026 – Imba – Ravana/From Within [OUT NOW!]

Forthcoming 14/11/16!

As we stumble into October, wondering where the hell 2016 went exactly, the unmistakeable chill of English weather returns to London’s air, and drops all of our moods somewhat. Fortunately, Bristol-based Imba is dropping more than temperatures, with his debut single ‘Ravana/From Within’ set to light up the dance-floor this coming winter. Having made quite the impression with his track ‘Persistence featuring Leah Costello’ – the Liquifyah crew member has delivered 2 solid tracks in this release.

‘Ravana’ captures the essence of this seasonal change, with chilling ethereal vocals, tonal percussion and menacing textures giving body the warming, rattling bassline. ’From Within’ meanwhile is more suitable of cold winters morning. Cold melodic tones usher in cooling pads, letting a warm sub bass take point under a drum break with an undeniably old school flavour.

This pair of solid rollers is sure to bring Imba to the forefront of the newcomers breaking out into the scene this year.

Pola & Bryson Present: ‘This Time Last Year’
The Vanguard Project (BCee & Villem)
Loz Contreras
Thought Trails
Hosted By: Siege MC

Well hasn’t the year flown by! Less than half a year ago, we toasted our tender age of 2, and now we’re celebrating another milestone, the first of many LP’s on Soulvent with SV024, Pola & Bryson – This Time Last Year.

Label co-founder Jack ‘Pola’ Higgins and long-term friend and collaborator Harry Bryson officially joined forces back in early 2015. Off the strength of their acclaimed ‘The Music EP’ the pair set to work in carefully crafting their debut LP, and after countless hours of blood, sweat, mix downs and Dr Pepper: the duo are ready to unveil their masterpiece.

We’re incredibly excited to celebrate the release of this blockbuster piece of work with a line-up boasting some of the most exciting talent in Drum & Bass to date. Legendary Spearhead CEO, ‘BCee’ joins forces with label regular, ‘Villem’ to bring us ‘The Vanguard Project’, who put their amazing touches to the debut single from This Time Last Year, ‘Open My Eyes ft. MVE’. Next up we have Liquicity regular and recent collaborator on the album, ‘Loz Contreras’ bringing you the purest of summer vibes. Joining this already solid selection of artists are Soulvent regulars and favourites, ‘GLXY’ who have also been tearing the Drum & Bass scene up over the past 12 months. Our favourite multi-genre DJ, ‘Thought Trails’ will also be making his return to a Soulvent line-up to bring you the best in bass and beats.

SV024 – Pola & Bryson – This Time Last Year LP [OUT NOW!]

Release Date: 08/08/16
Cat No: SV024

Pola & Bryson – This Time Last Year LP

Soulvent Records proudly presents ‘This Time Last Year’, the debut album from one of the scenes most talked about acts; Pola & Bryson. The East London duo have been on top form this year, with releases on Soulvent, Spearhead, Liquicity & Hospital Records. After making it official in early 2015, these two have been non stop in the studio, intuitively paving the way for their first LP, whilst setting a stellar example of how to do it your own way, and do it well.

The album sees the lads link up with some of the finest producers and vocalists in the UK and beyond, including: New Zealand singer Blake, Forest Gate faithful Sammie Bella, North London based singer songwriter Tayah Ettienne, Bristol big cheese Siege MC, popular Dutch born singer MVE, and Leeds artist Loz Contreras. The first single from the project even boasts remixes from Mitekiss, and most notably Bcee & Villems’ new venture ‘The Vanguard Project’.

As the title track portrays, ‘This Time Last Year’ takes listeners through their journey over the last 12 months, building a truly signature sound of drum and bass that entices the ears like no other. The intelligence in Pola & Bryson’s production shines through in tracks like ‘A Good Thing’ and ’Stuck In A Memory’, where they explore a more unconventional, almost futuristic side of the genre. Alongside those, a host of vocal lead tracks on the LP like ‘Open My Eyes’, ‘Run From You’, ’Talk To Me’ and ‘Temporary Love’ make for a nostalgic, beautifully balanced debut work.

Already with support from several artists over at Hospital, Spearhead head honcho BCee, along with backing from Radio 1 regular Friction, this 15 track album will undeniably be on the lips and in the headphones of fans & industry moguls alike for a very long time.

SV023 – Rho – All Night [OUT NOW!]

Cat No: SV023

Pre-order here!

The 23rd release on Soulvent comes from the rather unknown producer Prash Chouhan, otherwise known as Rho. After his first release on the imprint on the New Soul EP (SV021), he demonstrated his propensity for energy driven tracks, pulsing with rhythm and low end. Hailing from Watford, UK, now furthering his production at the University of Leicester, Rho represents a new chapter in young UK talent which we’re more than happy to support here at Soulvent.

‘All Night’ opens with ethereal sweeps, percussive pops and a true sense of unease, backed by a filtered drum break. Progressing into a dark roller full of momentum with a pulsing bass that drives the scarce vocal sample into an all out heavy hitter.

Flip-side ‘Players’ meanwhile opens with reverse pianos, twinkling chime like synths, and warm chords. Shifting, rumbling melodies simmer behind soulful male vocals and a warm gliding sub rides the clicky-drum track along smoothly.

With a firm grasp on the endless capabilities of a strong sub bass, and an intelligent approach to the melodic elements of liquid dnb, Rho proves one to watch for the next year or so, while fast proving place in the Soulvent camp.
