sv062: winter soul 2019 VA EP (out 22.11)

With Winter looming large here in London, we aim to ease the coming cold, wet and unwelcome chill with the next instalment of our Season Soul compilation; back in full effect. We present to you 8 tracks, with some returning artists on the label like Monika, Conrad Subs and Luna, along with some fresh global talent to liven the pool.

New boy Noble’s opener, ‘Go’, is a think-break laden roller with bags of tropical percussion that will take you away from the dreary drudge of winter. The gritty sub bass ladened, ‘Cerebral Bore’, from Sao Paulo based producer Black Opps is low-down, deep & minimal.

Following on from his recent foray on Soulvent with his latest single, ‘Rocket Sprocket’, Monika gives us a sun-drenched, chord laden roller entitled ‘Freedom’, brimming with luscious pianos and big double bass plucks. Cologne-based producers Matt View, Marvel Cinema return to the label, teaming up with T:Base to deliver us a shimmering salvo, ‘Shining Sea’ and we also see the return of Conrad Subs, who recently featured on our 5 Years of Soulvent Records compilation album, with his heater of a track, aptly named ‘Bonfire’.

Long time fan, first time caller, Iklektix makes his Soulvent debut bringing through some additional soulful flavours with his track ‘So Real’ alongside Bert H and Elle Chante’s offering, ‘Flood Of Emotions’. To round things off, Luna returns to the Seasonal Soul series with his track ‘Bush Fire’, a nightmarish blend of distorted basslines and classic chopped breaks

Kick the cold into touch with our Winter Soul 2019 EP. Available to stream/download from 22nd November.

sv061: mountain – cold breath ep (out 18/10)

With recent releases on High Tea Music and InfluenzaMedia, now returning to Soulvent with a formidable 4 track EP, we gladly welcome back one of our most exciting producers: Shigeta Kamiyama AKA Mountain. Fresh from collaborating with another of Japan’s hottest drum & bass exports Makoto on his new album Tomodachi Sessions, Mountain firmly reminds us why his production is so enjoyable with his new EP, entitled Cold Breath. The producer’s playful approach to the genre is fully explored throughout the project, and was certainly worth the wait!

The opening acoustic guitar intro of Stillness brings a cathartic energy, later accompanied by subtle percussion and atmospheric sounds. The result is a chunky cacophony of high quality drum sections, warm synths and thrumming sub bass. This feel-good number is certain to bring smiles and energy on the dancefloor with its flute-like melody drop rounding out the track perfectly.

Title track Cold Breath releases its way into a tasteful, moving chord progression, where jazz-tinged piano gives way to Mountain’s satisfying sliced vocal cuts. The huge lead synth is backed by a Rustie-esque mix of drums and arpeggiated awesomeness, resulting in a seriously satisfying halftime groove.

Roar has a serene and warming intro that belies what is to come. Plucking synths and measured, twanging strings bubble nicely. The drop brings the familiar deep bursts of synth that we have seen on previous Mountain releases and catchy, high-end top line that seems to reach for miles.

Lastly, Supernova bursts into life with punchy drums and a relaxed organ melody. The 32-bar breakdown before the first drop takes you on a journey, culminating in an expansive drop that is littered with drawn out progression. Filled with glistening melodies, contrasted with a solid syncopated bassline, this track is sure to bring the twinkle to any ravers eye.

Available in all good stores on the 18th of October, we recommend you sample the dizzying heights of this latest offering from Mountain.

sv060: monika – rocket sprocket (out 20.09)

Maxwell ‘Monika’ Sweeney should certainly not be an uncommon name to fans of our output by now. After birthing our own Podcast last year in June, the man himself led the charge for a solid 12 months, with his format for the show seeing guests delve into their influences. There was no shortage of interesting choices and outcomes, much like the New Zealand resident’s production. While his last EP, Fortress, was an exploration into more down-tempo and ambient territory, Rocket Sprocket marks Max’s 5th release on Soulvent with a high octane return to the realms of drum & bass – and it certainly doesn’t disappoint.

A-side Rocket Sprocket blasts off with a click heavy break, counting down to launch sequence start. Bubbling pads make room for tasty crunches of low-end, with techy synth stabs and distant chimes providing progression over the top of a high energy, squelching sub bassline. This track is a notable shift from his normal aural output, but in no way is this a bad thing!

Wake Up on the flip starts with a rousing vocal sample and features Monika’s trademark percussion progression. No drowsy drums on show here! You are awoken from the peacefulness of the airy first breakdown with a no-nonsense, full-bodied bassline. As the vocal harmonies develop, we’re introduced to a murmuring top line arp in the run up to the second breakdown, that allows you to catch your breath before you’re dropped back into the depths of that expansive bassline.

Available in all good stores from the 20th of September, we implore you not to dawdle on this one Comrade. Wake up and smell the tunes!

sv059: terror – feels the same (out now)

Our next single comes from Terror, the brand new moniker of Tony Friend. No stranger to the global music scene – Tony is best known for previously being one half of North London dubstep duo Modestep. After experimenting in the realms of 140 and touring the world with various bands, we proudly present Tony’s first foray into the world of drum & bass. He will also be following up this release with his debut set at our 5 Years of Soulvent takeover in Manchester in collaboration with Kodiak Productions on 20th September.

Feels The Same combines full-bodied, melodic keys with soul-striking vocals courtesy of Obi Franky, returning with more of the same sultry goodness as previously displayed on Jolliffe’s Dubplate Culture EP. The track’s uplifting, transcendental synths are matched with warm sub bass, and will be sure to see your Summer out in the best way possible.

Our Way features tight drum sonics and heartfelt piano sections, complemented by the smooth vocals of Florence Rawlings. Rawlings, a professional jazz singer, who has previously performed at the Stuttgart Jazz open also dives head first into the world of drum & bass, with an accomplished topline to form the B-side into a classic liquid hand-raiser.

The release also contains instrumental versions of both tracks. Available in all good stores from 30th August, this is certainly not a debut release to sleep on.

sv058: askel & elere – yeah alright ep (out now)

Juho Kavasto and Sainey Gibba, better known as Askel & Elere, slid into the Soulvent soundscape way back in April last year with their gloriously slick single Last Leaves. The pair then followed up their debut with Once, featured on February’s 5 Years of Soulvent album. We welcome their unique sound back onto one of East London’s finest independent imprints, with a jazz infused masterclass in Finnish DnB.

Coincidences launches into gear with a rising synth and bounding bongos, which break into a luscious Rhodes. The drop sees in a chunky, pulsating synth bass and the second brings a quirky, syncopated counter-point melody that works in-step with the chords effortlessly.

Chest-plate kicks and stifling snares bring in the sweeping pads of Deluge, which collide with the trickling twinkles of piano and warm, guttural bass. The subtle strings after the second drop round out Deluge’s progression nicely. This track really shows off the duos’ understanding of space in composition.

Until She Turns Her Back begins with a simpler approach, and will straight up have you reaching for your double bass air-plucks in the dance. This bad boy bassline takes centre stage, underpinned by a straightforward rolling break, while the seemingly random keys solo in the breakdown simply ooze class.

Last up, title-track Yeah Alright closes out the EP in foreboding fashion. With creepy vocal samples reminiscent of Portal & Half Life, and big lurching subs, this one is a certified head-nodder.

The Yeah Alright EP will be available in all good digital stores from the 9th of August, and we reckon it’s just what your Summer was missing.

sv057: siege – intentions ep (out now)

In the world of drum & bass, the humble MC is so often overlooked. So when our good friend & resident Jaye ‘Siege MC’ Balmer told us that he was keen to do a solo EP on the imprint, we simply couldn’t resist. The Bristolian wordsmith has assembled a glittering selection of producers and fellow unsung heroes to grace his first 4-track project, which we’re hugely excited to home.

Intentions ft. Jessie Bowden (produced by Echo B aka Colby Brown) starts off the EP with incredibly crisp, high energy drums and a deceptively catchy hook laying the foundation for some of Siege’s best writing yet. The title track gives us an insight into the trials and tribulations of a drum & bass MC.

Heathens ft. Visionobi (produced by Curricula) sees Siege join forces with the Rogue Jedi, Visionobi, to let their souls’ vent some deep and thought-provoking verses that meander through the eerie atmospherics and haunting vocal samples laid down by lesser known UK born, NZ based producer Curricula.

Champagne & Battle Scars ft. MC Fava (produced by Hiraeth) more of liquid DnB’s household names feature here to provide some sun drenched, feel-good vibes that will certainly get some air time at festivals. MC Fava complements Siege brilliantly, reminding us whatever life brings us, drum & bass can heal even the deepest wounds.

Overdue (produced by Hiraeth) has a title befitting the release of a 4 track EP from Siege MC. Rounding out the EP with a silky liquid roller, Siege invites us to settle down to his approach on living the music lifestyle over a dreamy, piano laden tune produced by up and coming producer Hiraeth.

Get your hands on some sublimely scribed stanzas to supplement your Summer. Available from all good outlets on 12th July 2019.

sv056: jolliffe – dubplate culture ep (out now)

Splashing onto the Soulvent scene with his debut single Howl back in March, Pete Jolliffe Thomas is back with a beefy offering of seriously diverse tunes. This 4-tracker shows off more of this relatively new producer’s range, with some impressive features to chuck even more weight behind these intelligently composed tunes.

London lad Pastry Maker punctuates Movie Scene with his hypnotic hook while the tune itself is a playground of snares, percussive pops and lurching low-end, resulting in a distinctly welcome jungle feel.

Next up, title track Dubplate Culture sees Leeds veteran Coppa share some pertinent thoughts surrounding test presses and their importance in the genre that we love so dearly. A polite reminder to all that sometimes you should let a dub remain a dub (and stop with the SoundCloud rips!).

Penultimate track Northern Shades levels out the EP with thundering kicks, glitchy percussion hits and a thumping bassline. Guttural, almost tribal vocals pre-empt the drop and rhythmic atmosphere patterns cleverly flank the chunky sub on offer.

Last up Obi Franky’s uplifting vocals throw Moving On into gear, sitting atop a warm foundation of piano and big risers. These huge vocals, matched with neck-snappingly crisp drums and a satisfying dose of bass, shows that Jolliffe can also unleash liquid inspired hand raisers when he so chooses.

Look out for this well rounded, 4 track slice of Dubplate Culture, available in all good stores on 28th June.

sv055: in:most – bonsai/fade out ft. tempza & walk:r (out now)

Marking their fifth release on the imprint, the dynamic duo that is In:Most are back on Soulvent with another pair of bangers for your listening pleasure. Continuing to roll out their Jekyll & Hyde-esque couplings of late – this release showcases the ever-maturing sound of this Cambridge based duo. Bailey Greer and Josh Croft have been extra busy of late, reviving the famed Spoonfed d&b night at the Fez Club in their hometown, after a 5 year hiatus. We strongly recommend you get down to one of these shows in the coming months!

Bonsai further develops the sound the pair have been perfecting since tracks like Yesterday, Pieces and Crimson Eyes. Inviting pads and pianos ease us into a kinetic, fluid arpeggio which forms the backbone of the track. Frangible breaks coupled with tasty bass swells accentuate this driving track, while a syncopated take on the lead switches up the end of the track.

Fade Out features the vocals of Hybrid Minds’ go-to-mic-man Tempza, alongside Northern up-and-comer Walk:r, (who’s name should certainly be on your radar!). A spacey, ominous intro teases tear-out bass synths which don’t disappoint on the drop. Swelling, punctuated textures of low-end are interspersed with dynamic patterns of varying percussion and glitched-out fills. The second drop further fleshes out the theme, with unsettling samples underlining the track’s tech-driven foundations.

Available in all good stores from the 7th of June, don’t miss out on another accomplished offering from this exciting duo.
