sv056: jolliffe – dubplate culture ep (out 28.06)

Splashing onto the Soulvent scene with his debut single Howl back in March, Pete Jolliffe Thomas is back with a beefy offering of seriously diverse tunes. This 4-tracker shows off more of this relatively new producer’s range, with some impressive features to chuck even more weight behind these intelligently composed tunes.

London lad Pastry Maker punctuates Movie Scene with his hypnotic hook while the tune itself is a playground of snares, percussive pops and lurching low-end, resulting in a distinctly welcome jungle feel.

Next up, title track Dubplate Culture sees Leeds veteran Coppa share some pertinent thoughts surrounding test presses and their importance in the genre that we love so dearly. A polite reminder to all that sometimes you should let a dub remain a dub (and stop with the SoundCloud rips!).

Penultimate track Northern Shades levels out the EP with thundering kicks, glitchy percussion hits and a thumping bassline. Guttural, almost tribal vocals pre-empt the drop and rhythmic atmosphere patterns cleverly flank the chunky sub on offer.

Last up Obi Franky’s uplifting vocals throw Moving On into gear, sitting atop a warm foundation of piano and big risers. These huge vocals, matched with neck-snappingly crisp drums and a satisfying dose of bass, shows that Jolliffe can also unleash liquid inspired hand raisers when he so chooses.

Look out for this well rounded, 4 track slice of Dubplate Culture, available in all good stores on 28th June.

sv055: in:most – bonsai/fade out ft. tempza & walk:r (out 07.06)

Marking their fifth release on the imprint, the dynamic duo that is In:Most are back on Soulvent with another pair of bangers for your listening pleasure. Continuing to roll out their Jekyll & Hyde-esque couplings of late – this release showcases the ever-maturing sound of this Cambridge based duo. Bailey Greer and Josh Croft have been extra busy of late, reviving the famed Spoonfed d&b night at the Fez Club in their hometown, after a 5 year hiatus. We strongly recommend you get down to one of these shows in the coming months!

Bonsai further develops the sound the pair have been perfecting since tracks like Yesterday, Pieces and Crimson Eyes. Inviting pads and pianos ease us into a kinetic, fluid arpeggio which forms the backbone of the track. Frangible breaks coupled with tasty bass swells accentuate this driving track, while a syncopated take on the lead switches up the end of the track.

Fade Out features the vocals of Hybrid Minds’ go-to-mic-man Tempza, alongside Northern up-and-comer Walk:r, (who’s name should certainly be on your radar!). A spacey, ominous intro teases tear-out bass synths which don’t disappoint on the drop. Swelling, punctuated textures of low-end are interspersed with dynamic patterns of varying percussion and glitched-out fills. The second drop further fleshes out the theme, with unsettling samples underlining the track’s tech-driven foundations.

Available in all good stores from the 7th of June, don’t miss out on another accomplished offering from this exciting duo.

sv054 – ac13 – drag race ep (out 10th may)

At Soulvent we simply love working with new talent. AC13 is a young producer hailing out of Brighton. His track on the 5 Years of Soulvent LP really hit us right in the feels for angrier, sub-laden drum & bass – so much so that we invited him back for a fruitful 4-track fumble.

Bad Feeling, as the title might suggest, could certainly leave you with a nauseous notion as tight-knit percussive patterns pair with an absolute stinker of a bassline. Ruthless breaks meet simple yet effective open hi-hats and snaps – all nicely rounded out by a 2-note synth line.

Lightyears is a chance for AC13 to show his range, a liquid-tinged break from the all-out sonic assault it follows. An absolutely mesmerising piano chord progression and top-line melt into a sparse scape of clicks and bass, backed by luscious reverse pads.

Title track Drag Race has a wonkier feel – stuffed full of dissonant low-end and screeching samples. We know this one will have DJs racing for a wheel up!

Lazer Quest already boasts BBC Radio 1 support from the likes of Danny Byrd, shudderingly-satisfying gutter bass paired with playful saxophone notes that pierce through the trademark AC13 percussion rounds. A sublime way to round out this heavyweight EP.

Out in all good stores on 10th May 2019.

sv053 – dilemma – gone too soon ft. robert manos (out now)

Brighton based blue-haired-beat-crafter Dilemma has been making waves of late in the drum & bass community with her incredibly mature take on the genre. With heavy support from the likes of Random Movement, Calibre and Bailey, releases on Flight Patterns and DNBArena alongside featuring in UKF’s 2019 ‘Ones to watch’ – we’re thrilled to announce her new single Gone Too Soon.

The title track features the soothing vocal tones of liquid legend, Robert Manos. It’s cleverly layered intro and progressive elements build gradually, setting the gorgeous framework for Manos’ lyrics to shine beautifully over the rolling drums and syncopated piano lines.

Limbo takes us on a more ominous and soothing journey into the realms of liquid. Echoing vocal stabs and piano licks take the lead with a smooth rolling bassline and drum track to match.

You can grab this pair of luscious liquid rollers from all good stores and streaming services from 19.04.2019!

sv052 – jolliffe – howl ft. linguistics

As well as being home to a revered university, Cambridge boasts the residency of a certain calibre of drum & bass producer – the likes of Nu:Tone, Commix, Logistics, In:Most, Saikon… the list goes on.

We can now add to that list one Pete Jolliffe Thomas, with his neuro-infused take on drum & bass. After an exciting inception the Clashtone member neatly boasts a forthcoming single on our own Soulvent, with 2 tracks offering up an equal lashing of low-end.

Howl sees Jolliffe thrash together crunchy drums, beefy basslines and sharp words courtesy of Linguisitics to provide a high tempo, thought-provoking floor filler. Swirling synths and high energy percussion will give Soulvent fans a pleasant surprise.

Profoundis shows Jolliffe’s ability to bring different tempos to the mix with more haunting vocal samples, underpinned by perfectly-crafted, rolling percussion and cascading basslines.

You will certainly be pleasantly surprised by this break from the norm on Soulvent Records. Jolliffe is one to watch in 2019. Howl // Profoundis is out on 22nd March in all good stores.

SV051 – In:Most – Crimson Eyes (released 1st March)

To celebrate the first day of Spring, we proudly welcome the return of Cambridge based favourites In:Most and their new single Crimson Eyes. Hot on the heels of their recent contributions on our massive 5 Years of Soulvent compilation – and their impressive collaborative endeavours on Hospital Records’ annual Sick Music alongside Saikon – the duo return with another two track release that provides two diverse, yet equally satisfying tunes.

Crimson Eyes is a textbook example of what In:Most do best. Swelling arpeggios, soft oozy synths and an undeniably memorable hook are the order of the day. The tune starts off with rising synth notes that drop into crisp, high energy drums. Expect to see this tune filling out this year’s festival stages!

Uh! meanwhile features long-time friend and second-time caller, Walk:r. The trio exercise a more tech-driven approach on this one, a naughty stepper where the sub-bass and surprise hits keep you guessing throughout. Uh! certainly packs a punch befitting the title.

With a strong and varied back catalogue as well as some stellar releases over the last few months, you can see why In:Most are one of our big bets for 2019.

You can grab both tracks in all good digital stores from the 1st of March.

monika – fortress ep (released 30th november)

Maxwell Sweeney has proved himself our understated golden boy this year, quietly carving out his niche for intelligently crafted drum &bass. The once Londoner now offers up a first for the Soulvent imprint, a foray into tempos outside 170, truly showcasing his understanding for all things electronic, he plates up a six-course array of aural appetisers (free from additives).

Fortress begins with the thought provoking atmospherics and tribal drums of the Prologue, culminating in uplifting synths and sweeping vocals that serve as a tantalising intro for the rest of this artistic EP.

The light drums and robotic synths of Airstrike open up into detailed layers of hypnotic percussion, coupled with a clever bassline.

Little World starts with a steady beat that lays the foundation for a distant and relaxed melody. The punctuated vocal sits atop a truly poignant musical journey that will bring you back for more.

The interlude Evelyn, is an aural comma, punctuating the EP with soft rain, thrumming synths and a melancholic love scene.

Moving effortlessly to perhaps the penultimate big finish; the garage influence of Eve and The Opal is undeniable. Relaxing chimes and building percussion gives us a deeper look into Max’s understanding of London’s quiet heartbeat.

Lastly, Epilogue rounds out the EP with expansive synth driven fun.

As the name suggests, this EP is strong enough to stand the test of time. Pause to open your mind and enjoy this monumental project, out on the 30th of November.
