Simon Says Local is our first East London fundraiser to remember and celebrate the life of the wonderful Simon Goss – son, husband, dad, mentor, social worker, record label boss, DJ and late of this parish.
Simon was tragically taken from us by lung cancer, only 10 weeks after his diagnosis, having just turned 44. Simon liked a pint or 3 and when we moved to Leytonstone from Hackney, almost exactly 10 years ago, the Red Lion was a pub and club venue called Zulus. We certainly had the odd night out there (sometimes very odd!) but it wasn’t really Simon’s cup of tea.
When Zulus closed, the site stood empty for a couple of years and Simon often talked about what he would do with the space if he had the money. A community hub, great food, somewhere you could take your kids (he sat outside pubs, A LOT, when his own kids were young!), an affordable club space and DJ’s meeting a wide range of tastes (though having been a resident DJ at Camden’s Jazz Café for 5 years, he was a soul, jazz, funk and hip hop boy at heart!)
Apart from the fact that he would have had family members doing the catering (!!), his vision was pretty close to what Antic have achieved with the Red Lion. Sadly, Simon didn’t live to see it, so it seems only right and proper for all of those who knew and loved him and a whole bunch of new Simon Goss fans to have a knees up in his local in his honour!!
So please join us for a most marvellous night of back to back local live music and DJ’s, including Simon’s House Band, the Wah Wah 45s Players, featuring his sons Tom and Joe. Everyone involved gives their time and talent for free, so every penny you pay for your ticket goes to the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, for whom we have raised over £50K in Simon’s memory. We promise you will have a ball and you won’t even need to get a cab home!! (and don’t forget your flat cap!)
